I’ve put off this post for too many months. I would start writing and then stop. The words that came, my words, never seemed enough. Never adequate to convey all I wanted to, to explain just how special this session was to me or how many tears were shed as I reviewed and edited the images.
Meet Olivia. I photographed Olivia for The Gold Hope Project, a non-profit organization of photographers around the world dedicated to providing the gift of photography to families who have a child with cancer.
When I met Olivia she was 3 years old and had been fighting Acute Myeloid Leukemia for 21 months. Through 13 rounds of chemotherapy she continued being happy, joyful and brightening the day for everyone around her.
Our session earlier this summer was held at the hospital and we were fortunate to be able to take Olivia outside to enjoy the beautiful day. From the moment I met her I could see Olivia was just brimming with joy and love for life and everyone in it. She loved The Wiggles and enjoyed dancing and doing all of the hand movements along with the music. We had a great time of dancing and giggles during our session. Sadly, two weeks after our session cancer won the battle and Olivia passed away. Her parents were with her and her pain was gone, but her memory and love for life will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to have met her and experienced the love and joy that poured from her tiny body.
Here is a link to one of her favorite Wiggles songs she danced to during our session:
Giving “kisses” to her mom and enjoying some cuddles and tickles
If you know someone battling childhood cancer please share with them about The Gold Hope Project or have them contact email@example.com to find out more about receiving a complimentary photo session.
