Time.  It is doing what is has always done – flying by!

The reality of that fact is seen each time I photograph families of past photography clients and see how the children have grown.  These cuties I photographed as their preschool photographer and it was such a treat to see how they have grown when we held their recent family photo session in Fair Oaks.

Let’s take a look back at one of my Fall family mini-sessions today. This sweet girl had just turned 1 year old and was happy to bring mom and dad along for our session. She was even so excited for her first modeling opportunity she brought Grandma along!

Although a bit camera shy, I could tell throughout our session that little Miss A loved having fun and laughing. Her adorable smile showed off those precious little baby teeth and she adored having mom and dad swing her. As new clients to Mindy Newton Photography I enjoyed meeting this kind-hearted family and was glad we were able to have a little sunshine for our session despite a rainy day forecast.

Old Sacramento is such a great location for photo sessions with a variety of brick and wood backgrounds and my favorite – arched doorways! As an Old Sac family photographer I could take three different families to Old Sac in one week and due to the variety of backdrops throughout town it could look like I had used three different locations for those sessions.  In this short custom mini-session we were able to utilize three unique settings alone!

Mom did a fantastic job styling this session and I especially loved all of the attention to detail with the accessories including dad’s statement bow tie!  From head to toe each family member looked terrific for this urban, old-world location.  Such a sweet and loving family – I can just hear the giggles again as I look through their images!

When I first received a call from this mom inquiring about a session I remember her being concerned, as most moms are, about whether I could corral her 3 young kiddos and get any good images of them together. I assured her we would have fun and not to worry.  On the day of our Custom Mini-Session in Old Sacramento, despite a chilly wind, I think we had a great time capturing this family and their energetic, adorable and fun-loving kiddos!  I was so glad they included their lovely foreign exchange students in our photo session as well.

A couple of weeks ago I took my kids out for a little photo session to document this age for their upcoming birthdays. During our session I was my usual self snapping pictures and giving them a little direction as they played on a swing. On a whim I decided I wanted to be captured in some of these moments and took turns securing my camera strap around each of my kids’ necks as I asked them to photograph me with their sibling. I put my focus point on my camera to the middle point and just asked my children to “point and shoot”.

I honestly had no idea what we would get. Would our eyes be closed in the moments the rookie photographer snapped our pictures? Would our expressions be honest or pleasant to look at? Most of all, would we even be in focus???? I decided I wasn’t going to “sweat the small stuff” as the saying goes and instead enjoy spending the time with my kids in hopes that even one image might come out that would remind us of this time in our lives.

Later that evening as I was looking through the images I came across this one my daughter took of me pushing my son on the swing.  Amidst a surprising number of fairly focused images was this one.

Completely and perfectly out of focus.

It wasn’t that the focus dropped in front of or behind us, there was just absolutely nothing in focus…except the light. That beautiful, pure light of the sun.

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”                    – John 8:12Family Photographer_0011-1

This week as we’ve been preparing to remember the horrific death Jesus suffered so that we might be saved and his miraculous resurrection three days later, this image kept coming to mind as a reminder of where my focus should be. In a world intent on filling our minds with images, words, challenges, busyness, disparaging thoughts, hopeless losses, seemingly needless pain and so much more, I needed to step back and refocus on the Giver of light and life. I need to focus more on the sacrifice and death He endured and the hope that came through His resurrection. I need to daily remind myself how much He loves me. That regardless of anything I could ever accomplish in this life, I am enough. I am precious. I am HIS. And you know what?!       You are too!

Where is your focus today?

Is it rushing around thinking of last minute activities to do with the kids before Spring Break is over?

Is it stressing out over how much you have to do for that Easter egg hunt and get together?

Has your focus moved into next week already overwhelmed by how you’re going to be in 2 places at once and get everything on your “to do” list checked off?

If that sounds familiar then you have a glimpse of exactly where my focus has been off and on the last couple of days. I get it. I understand.

Join with me as I try to push aside those nagging “to do” lists, the pressure of being a good mom and making sure I’ve got everything taken care of. Let’s try to take some time this weekend to focus on the One that loves us deeply even when it’s 5pm and we haven’t showered or figured out what is for dinner yet. The One that cares for us unconditionally even when we’ve lost our temper or said something we shouldn’t. The One that doesn’t care if our cookies are the chewiest or our house the most spotless. The One that gave His life so that we might live.

“For God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son, so that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16

Focus on the light this weekend – the beautiful, perfect, life-giving Light of the Lord.

“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” – John 11:25-26

Since I began as a Sacramento Photographer my business has grown and become such a blessing to our family and my creative soul.  From day one I have always been open to bartering photo services for other services I regularly use and need such as massages (these have become much needed with so much time spent at my computer), haircuts and printing services.

A couple of years ago I went to a networking meeting and met Kimberly – a kind, fun-loving and talented hair stylist.  This year I contacted her about trading hair styling services for a Fall family mini-session and it worked out fantastic!  They love their photos and my daughter and I love our new stylish hair!  Her 4 kids were so fun to meet and they were a lovely family to photograph.

Kimberly has a salon in her home and does a fantastic job.  If you are in need of haircut, color or styling services you can contact her here. Thank you Kimberly for being open to trading services and I can’t wait for our next session together!
